Frequently Asked Questions
How much will I receive from the German state pension?
Your German state pension depends primarily on your earnings and how long you contribute. Contributions generate pension points, which are then used to calculate your pension. Your annual pension information from Deutsche Rentenversicherung provides an estimate based on your record. For internationals who begin contributing later in their career, it is particularly important to understand whether a retirement gap remains.
How much should I save for retirement in Germany?
There is no single percentage that works for everyone. How much you need depends on your age, desired retirement income, existing pensions and investments, expected retirement age and how long you have left to build your retirement assets. A pension gap calculation is a useful starting point.
What happens to my pension if I leave Germany?
Leaving Germany does not normally mean losing the German pension rights you have already earned. German pensions can generally be paid abroad, although the rules can depend on your destination, nationality and contribution history. In some circumstances, people leaving Germany may also qualify for a refund of certain contributions, but doing so can eliminate the associated German pension rights.
Can private pension contributions reduce my taxable income?
Certain types of retirement provision can provide German tax advantages, while others do not offer the same treatment. The benefit depends on the type of pension, your contributions and your personal tax circumstances. Tax efficiency can therefore be an important consideration when comparing retirement strategies.
When should I start retirement planning?
Generally, the earlier you start, the more time you have to build retirement assets and benefit from long term investment growth. But retirement planning is useful at almost any stage. The first step is understanding what you already have and the gap between that and the retirement you want.
What happens if I have worked in several countries?
You may build pension entitlements in several different countries during your career. Within the EU and under certain international social security agreements, insurance periods can sometimes be combined when determining eligibility, while each country generally pays its own pension for the periods covered there.
Do I need private retirement planning if I already pay into the German state pension?
That depends on the retirement income you want and what your existing arrangements are expected to provide. The state pension can form an important part of your retirement income, but it may not cover your individual target. The important question is therefore not simply whether you have a state pension, but whether your total expected retirement income is enough for the retirement you want.
This website provides general information only and does not constitute personal financial advice or a recommendation. Any suitable course of action depends on your individual circumstances. Investments carry risk and can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you invest. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Cross border situations can add additional complexity.
